Steam Irons Vs Steam Generators

Some people are very particular when it comes to how their clothes look… Others prefer to avoid ironing all together (Ironing is known as one of Britain’s most hated household jobs after all).

Steam Generator

A steam generator produces more heat than a traditional steam iron, this is due to the larger water tank in the base, and the separate boiler ensuring steam is produced quicker.  Thanks to the larger water tank you can iron continuous for longer… up to 2 hours for some models! This type of iron produces a more professional look, designed for thin or thick fabrics, and tackling the most stubborn creases.

Steam generators are therefore much bigger than traditional irons as it comes in two parts and need a sturdy ironing board for the weight of the steam station, whereas the steam iron is a self-contained handheld unit. The cost of these is significantly more than a traditional steam iron which start from as little as £15.00.

The Russell Hobbs 24420 Steam Generator – £79.99 In Black and White with a 90g steam output and a stainless steel easy glide soleplate. With an extra-large 1.3 litre water tank you can iron for longer without having to refill. Also featuring a 60 second heat up time and Anti Calc system so you no longer have to worry about repeatedly washing your steam generator as it comes with a special calc cleaning system that’s designed to filter and purify the water on its way into the tank.

Steam Iron

Steam irons are lightweight, easy to manoeuvre and ideal for smaller amounts of ironing. They are suitable for all ironing boards and easy to store.  There is a lot more choice on the market when it comes to steam irons. A standard steam iron will have a stainless-steel soleplate. Other settings you should look for are; auto shut off, self-cleaning, drip-stop and vertical steam.
