National Frozen Food Day
Thanks to frozen food we never have to cook, food can be kept in the freezer for 3 months or longer. March the 6th is this year’s frozen food day. Why not celebrate with a cooked frozen meal in front of the telly? Frozen food may have been around for decades, but it wasn’t until after the creation of the microwave in the 1940’s that heating frozen foods became much easier.
Today you will see aisles of frozen foods in grocery stores from different brands with many dietary habits and nutrition requirements. The first brand of frozen food was in fact Birdseye in the 1930’s.
How long does food last in the freezer?
You can freeze a wide variety of food, remaining frozen and technically safe to eat as bacteria will not grow for many months. However, over time frozen food will deteriorate in quality. Storage time depends on the type of freezer you have so check your manual. All freezers have a star rating which indicates this.
* Freezer temperature is -6°c, food can be stored for 1 week
** Freezer temperature is -12°c, food can be stored for 1 month
*** Freezer temperature is -18°c, food can be stored for 3 months
**** Freezer temperature is -18°c, food can be stored for 3 months or longer.
Fruit and vegetables can be stored in the freezer for the longest time of 8-12 months. Please check the best before dates on the packaging. Cooked meat can be kept in the freezer between 3-6 months.
